Charles Bukowski’s Diction
Lingual authority alludes to the essayist's unmistakable jargon decisions and style of articulation in a sonnet or story. An optional, normal significance is all the more unequivocally communicated with the word articulation â⬠the craft of talking obviously so each word is unmistakably heard and comprehended to its fullest unpredictability and limit. Lingual authority has various concerns; register words being either formal or casual in social settings. Artistic style examination uncovers how a section builds up tone and portrayal. Knowing this, how might we apply this origination to Bukowski's works? It's straightforward: What is generally significant about Bukowski's works is the accessibility. His works are written in plain language which makes them a quick read, and ââ¬Å"easilyâ⬠translatable (despite the fact that the bests are consistently the firsts). Charles Bukowski's style is supposedly one of the most imitated on the planet because of its effortlessness, and has impacted various authors in the authenticity development, which doesn't imply that this style is a simple decision, generally in light of the fact that his composing was, among different idiosyncrasies, vigorously affected by the geology and climate of his home city (Los Angeles) and is set apart by an accentuation on the common existences of helpless Americans, the demonstration of composing, liquor, associations with ladies, and the drudgery of work. His voice is from individuals who possesses a spot among those untouchables, outlaws, psychos and solitaries whose straightforward dreams accomplished despite seemingly insurmountable opposition a worldwide nearness. Henry Miller, Samuel Beckett, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Hubert Selby Jr. also, William Burroughs were a few creators who, as Bukowski, utilized these subjects to expess their own perspectives in an exceptionally specific manner, being Bukowski the most ââ¬Å"objective and clearâ⬠and non-academic one of them.Yet, even among such pariahs, he stays outside, a quintessential introvert, since the others, in contrast to him, uncover in their different styles a specific hard-won wheeling and dealing with writing that was, to him, the stuff of hoodwinks. The tone of a large portion of Bukowski's works is autobiographic and frequently reffers to his sentiments of a forever distorted kid in early immaturity by difficult bubbles, so serious that they must be carefully lanced. He additionally worked in a progression of appalling modest employments, finishing in a desensitizing nine-year stretch in the U. S. Mail station, realities that would give him a great deal to expound on, particularly his sentiments comparable to these realities. He totally delineated the evil of urban life and the discouraged in American culture. Bukowski depended on understanding, feeling, and creative mind in his work, utilizing direct language, brutality and sexual imagery. He composes with a nothing-to-lose honesty which sepa rates him from most other personal writers and artists. He has built up himself as an author with a predictable and resolute style dependent on what he anticipates as his ââ¬Ëpersonality,ââ¬â¢ the consequence of hard, exceptional living and the feeling of a barren, relinquished world. Notwithstanding destruction, Bukowskiââ¬â¢s free refrain handles the idiocies of life, particularly comparable to death. The topics of this world are likewise drinking, sex, betting, and music; the Bukowski style, be that as it may, resembles a fresh, hard voice; an incredible ear and eye for allotting the lengths of lines; and a shirking of illustration where an exuberant tale will do the equivalent sensational work. Moreover, his beauty with words gives a comic sparkle to even his meanest disclosures. Bukowskiââ¬â¢s sonnets give the feeling that they're best refreshing not as individual verbal antiques however as continuous portions in the story of his actual experiences, similar to a comi c book or a film serial. They are unequivocally account, drawing from a perpetual flexibly of stories that regularly include, for ex: a bar, a ghetto-ville inn, a pony race, a sweetheart, or any stage thereof. Bukowskiââ¬â¢s free stanza is actually a progression of definitive sentences separated into a long section, the short lines giving an impression of speed and conciseness in any event, when the language is wistful or antique. Possibly that is the explanation of way the perusers feel so near him, as we're conversing with a dear friend. The certainty is that, with his own basic expression, which is so immediate and simple justifiable (yet profound, touchy and genuine simultaneously) we can truly feel ourselves in what he's discussing, regardless of whether we have no clue about what it resembles to be from his point of view. At long last, we relate his encounters as the world and individuals as they truly seem to be, and we can't avoid it any more. it's actual: agony and endurin g assists with making what we call craftsmanship. given the decision I'd never pick this doomed agony and languishing over myself however by one way or another it discovers me as the sovereignties keep on moving on in.

Impact of Shale Gas Extraction on Business
Effect of Shale Gas Extraction on Business Research Question and Research Methodology This investigation was authorized by Stolthaven Terminals (ST) to investigate the potential monetary effect of US shale gas extraction on STââ¬â¢s business advancement technique. The business advancement teamââ¬â¢s fundamental evaluation of the effect of US shale gas on STââ¬â¢s business exhibits an opportunities for US LPG fares to fill neglected worldwide LPG request, basically in Asia. This paper creates a vital way to deal with choosing an ideal area for another Stolthaven LPG terminal. Stolthaven Terminals offers stockpiling for oil, synthetic items, and gas. The ramifications of any creative business creation process, for example, business shale gas extraction, ought to be assessed cautiously. At present, the organization isn't dynamic in the LPG stockpiling section. One of the STââ¬â¢s destinations is to effectively enter the LPG stockpiling market, which is profoundly affected by the US shale gas creation. Shale gas extraction is ventured to be the fundamental impetus for LPG creation and the improvement of related innovations. The LPG advertise change is accepted to be encouraged by the developing US fares of shale NGL-inferred LPG, the more extensive Panama Canal opening in 2015 and a huge LPG delivering limit increment by 2015. This section outlines the philosophy that will respond to the exploration question: Which venture openings does the effect of the US shale gas extraction upon the worldwide LPG showcase bring to a free stockpiling operatorââ¬â¢s (in application to Stolthaven Terminals) business improvement? The contemplated issue can be characterized as an administrative streamlining issue. The present business ought to be improved to mirror the truth of industry advancements under the US shale extraction impact. The procedure changes Chopra and Meindlââ¬â¢s (2013) hypothetical system for organize plan choices into an organized technique for LPG arrange structure and LPG stockpiling limit area with the goal that it tends to be applied to the considered issue and so as to build up a proposal for Stolthaven Terminals on the ideal area of another LPG terminal in 2015. The gracefully chain related administrative dynamic standards are built up by Chopra and Meindl. They infer a few factors that impact an enhanced dynamic procedure; vital components, mechanical elements, macroeconomics factors, and political variables (Chopra and Meindl, 2013). This part will set up the applicable philosophy and present the examination sub-questions. Technique The board science and the scholarly world concur on four stages that decide an area for autonomous capacity. Chopra and Meindl depict these stages and a key dynamic procedure for an office area. Stage one contains system and requires assurance upon improvement and development procedure, sufficient rivalry assessment, and capital imperatives. Stage two requires a local interest investigation, recognizable proof of dangers and contenders, assessment of neighborhood strategy and duty situations, ID of conceivable exchange limitations. Stage number three infers choice of potential destinations for an office, and stage four is a last area decision that depends on accumulated and dissected data of past stages. It is comprehended that a choice of such a nature is predicated by an official choice to assess the achievability of the venture. Such an official choice, with a high level of probability, is activated by a market balance move or a market change. For my situation, the US shale improvement is a trigger that encouraged LPG advertise changes and stood out to potential uneven characters. In the event that I apply Chopra and Meindlââ¬â¢s (2013) structure to Stolthaven Terminalââ¬â¢s expectation to enter the LPG stockpiling market, at that point the primary stage spins around the methodology contemplations with an objective to distinguish and comprehend the technique for the section. The organization is happy to enter the market and the money related choice is thought to be sure if a venture choice is created. To build up goals and characterize technique, an underlying business sector investigation and assessment of potential changes in the market is done to satisfy stage one of the structure. Part 3 decides the key methodology and finish of the underlying business sector appraisal while Chapter 4 investigations the vital ramifications and builds up a particular regions of uses for the system. The third part will get to the LPG showcase elements so as to limit the expansive market exercises down to a particular territory that conceivably contains business openings Stolthaven Terminals and is applicable for the built up structure. It closes with distinguishing proof of the most sharp LPG advertise portion and answers the main sub-question: From a synthetic stockpiling operatorââ¬â¢s point of view, in which region of the LPG market will the US-shale sway be the most apparent for a concoction stockpiling working organization? Further, the fourth section will settle the stage one and finishes up on key activity that is applicable to Stolthaven Terminals in the recognized LPG showcase fragment to respond to the sub-question 2: What is the effect of the shale-driven development of ease LPG sends out from the US on the worldwide petrochemical industry and which key ramifications for Stolthaven Terminals can be gotten from it? The subsequent stage brings thought of the design of the local office area (Chopra and Meindl, 2013). Here, satisfying the key ramifications, the item streams are displayed so as to distinguish the locales where the sent out from the US item ideally rises in future. Next, inside the fifth part, the 2015 estimating system enhancement model is built to address the sub-question 3: By what means will the US LPG trades be ideally assigned to the LPG request countries in 2015? Next, when the ideal locales of premium are distinguished, the changed 2015 LPG showcase structure is applied to applicable areas inside each ideal district with the goal that a neglected stockpiling request is topographically sited. The third stage contains an appraisal of the current business condition, which incorporates rivalry action evaluation, clients, and potential joint endeavor openings assessment. This stage additionally incorporates examination of the subjective factors of dynamic, for example, land area, nearness to significant dispersion places, hinterland availability, and areal interest localisation. Section 5 finishes up stage two of the structure with a system advancement model for the item, which distinguishes explicit areas for the third stage investigation. Section 6 spotlights on the third period of the market passage site determination process. Section 6 answers the sub-question 4: In which explicit ideal areas inside each ideal country will the neglected interest for LPG feedstock stockpiling develop? Next, the fourth stage moves the chose explicit area to evaluate costs, gauge arranging and planning, and set up estimating approach. Upon the finish of the last stage, an informed speculation choice and budgetary choice could be made and the further vital game-plan could be set up. I stop at stage three with a finishing up rundown of possibly appealing areas for a LPG terminal area. A noteworthy number of suppositions and absence of dependable information lead to a need to investigate the effect of these vulnerabilities upon the results of the exploration. Part 7 presents the subjective affectability investigation of the examination vulnerabilities and suspicions just as assesses the unwavering quality of the results of financial assessments. The affectability examination likewise researches the potential effect of executed determining suspicions upon the consequences of the quantitative model.

The Urge to Conform and the Difficulty of Respect in J.D. Salingerââ¬â¢s Franny and Zooey - Literature Essay Samples
In his novel Franny and Zooey, Salinger effectively portrays the troubled lifestyles of the Glass family, particularly those of Franny and Zooey, the two youngest Glass children. These two characters were raised with an education that promoted religious knowledge and awareness while being featured on a radio show by the name of ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a Wise Childâ⬠. While participating on the panel of this show, their older brother Seymour advises them to always be the best version of themselves for the ââ¬Å"Fat Ladyâ⬠(Salinger 201): an unnamed and unidentified woman that existed in the minds of the Glass family. This woman represents all of humanity and its traits, actions, and beliefs for Franny and Zooey. The symbol of the fat lady, while promoting equal respect for all humans, represents a lifestyle that is difficult to follow because of humanityââ¬â¢s natural inclination to conform, their inbred competition, and the ultimate indifference of the universe towards them. It is evident from a look at the people who live in our society that there is an omnipresent sense of conformity: the ceaseless desire to reach the standards and goals as defined by the most popular people in society. Franny herself feels this strong urge to conform to what society tells her to believe, how she should act, and even what she should do with her life; this behaviour is particularly apparent when she is with her boyfriend Lane. Abiding by the traditional relationship they live in, Lane appears to be the dominant and masculine figure with slight detachment from his significant other, while Franny wears the figurative mask of a loving, compassionate, and loyal girlfriend. Ironically, these two characters they are trying to impersonate betray their true feelings toward each other; Lane feels an unusually strong attraction to Franny which is evident in the ââ¬Å"handled, unfresh lookâ⬠(Salinger 4) of the letter she sent him, while Franny even admits that when she expresses how she missed Lane, ââ¬Å"the words were no sooner out than she realised that she didnââ¬â¢t mean them at allâ⬠(Salinger 10). This detached relationship serves as a prominent example of how humans as portrayed by Franny and Lane continuously have many of their decisions dictated by the norms and traditions of the society and others around them. While the Glass family may not be remotely similar to a traditional family, they just like all other humans exhibit conformity in terms of letting societyââ¬â¢s ideals influence their character and actions. Franny and Zooey in particular use religion and the beliefs and traditions from ideologies from all around the world as a different society they can conform to, giving them the comforting feeling that they arenââ¬â¢t changing themselves to what their society wants, but instead becoming some idea of independent, or unmoved by societal standards. This tendency of Franny and Zooeyââ¬â¢s to be so aware and use examples from Eastern religion come from their brothersââ¬â¢ idea to raise them with an education of ââ¬Å"as much as we knew about the men the saints, the arhats, the bodhisattvas, the jivanmuktas who knew something or everything about this state of beingâ⬠(Salinger 65-66). In effect, this meant giving them an education that promoted wisdom over knowledge . By trying to conform away from societyââ¬â¢s standards, they are simply conforming to a different set of ideas, and are no closer to true individuality than before. Similarly, they are still conforming by letting society influence their actions and beliefs. The little green book that Franny carries is a symbol of this idea that conformity away from their society is still conformity, and as Zooey reflects, that book ââ¬Å"is at the whole root of this whole businessâ⬠(Salinger 96). Humanityââ¬â¢s ceaseless need to conform to society stems from a part of human nature that is afraid of being an outcast and separated from society. It is this need to conform, therefore, that makes going out of a personââ¬â¢s way to follow the advice set forth by trying to please the Fat Lady so hard to carry out. By trying to be the best a person can be for everyone including themselves, it is when compared to how many people donââ¬â¢t do it going against the traditional actions and beliefs set forth by society, and creates a disheartening feeling of disunity with society. For many people, actions are determined by their thirst for approval from those around them, and reward in some form or another and therefore, a feeling of competition comes from this idea of a need for applause. Franny reflects that sheââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"just sick of ego, ego, egoâ⬠(Salinger 29) because she feels that people all around her are acting not on their true desires for life, but goals that are determined by their ego, and seek to receive approval and some kind of reward for everything they do. The awareness Franny has of these people who live their life in hopes of obtaining the approval of their friends, families, and even the strangers they are surrounded by comes from her own ego and the competition she feels when trying to live her life. Being brought up on the radio show ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a Wise Childâ⬠, Franny did much of what she did as a child in effort to please the Fat Lady that lived only in her mind. This need to do it for the Fat Lady or humanity was hard for Franny to achieve because she felt an inbred need to compete and be better than those around her, until she realized that this was caused by her ego, at which time sheââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"not afraid to compete. Itââ¬â¢s just the oppositeâ⬠(Salinger 30) since she wishes to have ââ¬Å"the courage to be an absolute nobodyâ⬠(Salinger 30). It had previously been Frannyââ¬â¢s competition and ego that made her be involved with the theatre, and her realization of that fact took her away from it. All humans are plagued by this need to be better than their peers, which is what makes doing anything in hope for bettering the society of humanity as a whole such a hard task. The idea of a universe that is completely indifferent to human affairs is controversial in Franny and Zooey because of the two main charactersââ¬â¢ religious upbringing, which is heavily supported by the idea of a higher power and religious importance. The stress placed on religion in the novel is especially evident through Buddy and Seymourââ¬â¢s idea to start their siblingsââ¬â¢ education with not ââ¬Å"a quest for knowledge at all but with a quest, as Zen would put it, for no-knowledgeâ⬠(Salinger 65) as well as Frannyââ¬â¢s obsession to experiment with the saying ââ¬Å"in the Bible when it says you should pray incessantlyâ⬠(Salinger 33). While the idea that religion is necessary to keep in touch with a meaningful relationship with the universe to remain having some validity is apparent, it isnââ¬â¢t explicitly mentioned through any quotations. To lose faith in oneââ¬â¢s religion obviously makes a person question what they believe to be true. For Franny, a person raised knowing the beliefs, traditions, and standards of many different societies outside of her own, she is lost in a religious sense in terms of what she truly believes in. Similar to the Russian peasant from her book ââ¬Å"The Way of a Pi lgrimâ⬠, Franny is in search of a life free of conformity and actions that are ââ¬Å"tiny and meaningless and sad-makingâ⬠(Salinger 26) in order to reach some kind of closure as to what she truly believes. As Zooey points out, Franny isnââ¬â¢t truly saying the Jesus Prayer to Jesus, but ââ¬Å"to St Francis and Seymour and Heidiââ¬â¢s grandmother all wrapped up in oneâ⬠(Salinger 169). This religious ambiguity leads to her breakdown over ego, society, conformity, and detracts her from the Fat Lady advice given to her from her brother. Therefore, the idea of treating all humans with an equal amount of respect in order to reach societal progression is such a grueling task because of humanityââ¬â¢s twisted religious ideologies. Furthermore, this idea of religious ambiguity illustrates the theme of the universeââ¬â¢s vast indifference toward human affairs and suffering through the vast amount of contrasting religious beliefs of society. Seymourââ¬â¢s Fat Lady advice can be applied to almost anything in life including school, work, social life, and health, but it can simultaneously be detrimental for growth because of humanityââ¬â¢s need to conform, compete, and contemplate. The basic principle of the Fat Lady entails maximum effort to be the very best version a person can be of themselves, but this is much easier said than done because of all the factors that make people remain who they are as a more mild and mediocre version of themselves. In a society in which everybody conforms, and yet so few of them are aware of it, it is too easy to become ignorant of the negative effects society has on a personââ¬â¢s life and the way it steals every bit of individuality of somebody who adopts the norms and standards they conform to. Therefore, the pursuit of individuality is a completely meaningless one that is fruitless and reaps no rewards because of its blatant lack of any reward or recompense. In effect, Franny and Zooey raises the ideas of what individuality actually is, and also whether the advantages of doing actions with a personââ¬â¢s ego as a sole motivator outweigh the negatives.

Ethnic And Communities Of The West Indian Standing Council
previous four days demonstrations and looting, out of 118 arrested, more than half were black. According to Lord Scarman, appointed to chair the public inquiry into this riot, he calls them an ââ¬Ëout bust of anger and resentmentââ¬â¢ by young black people against the police (Calvin, 2016). Ethnic and communities criminalization finds its roots in 1960 when a report to the West Indian standing council alleged that the police indulged in practices they referred as ââ¬Ënigger huntingââ¬â¢ (Weichselbaum, 2001; Hussain Bagguley, 2012). It showed the pre-existing beliefs about their supposed criminality. Black people are subject to extraordinary policing, and the media, politician and criminal justice referred to as ââ¬Ësocial problemââ¬â¢ (HM Government, 2014).â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It is an axiom of the liberal culture in policing that the police use of force should be essential (Mohan, 2015; Widdup Davenport, 2009). In 1991 according to Institute of Race Relations Paper, there were 16 cases of blacks highly reported between 1969 to 1991 in custody (Bowling Phillips, 2003). The maximum force was used to blacks than others causing these numbers to increase, recently in the UK, the number of people who have died in custody has increased by 32% in the p revious year, to add on that the majority of those who die to consist of blacks and ethnic minorities (Hannan et al., 1998). Religious discrimination has been another issue, Muslim in the United Kingdom have been victims of negative perceptions. Since 9/11 and 7/7 people developedââ¬â¢ islamophobia culture (Oââ¬â¢Brien Kevin, 2003). Social psychology research suggests that there is nothing that in principle prevents the likelihood, given certain circumstance of any group becoming perpetrators of unfair treatment by religion (Calvin, 2016). The over presentation of islamophobia culture by the media become a moral panic over world (Grobler, 2013). Police view Islam as individuals with devious minds, prone to radicalizations and terrorists. A fairly consistent body of research shows that relative to other religious groups in Britain, Muslim report and experience discrimination of high magnitude than any other religious groups (Grobler,

We will write a custom essay sample on Down the Hill Lab Report or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page (use values of KE and PE for cart with mass attached) According to the law of conservation of energy, in an isolated system, the initial potential energy and the kinetic energy should be the same. However, when we were doing the experiment, we could not guarantee for ideal situation with no extra resistance, so the data above, which shows that there is difference between the two energies (? ME = 1. 01J), indicates a certain amount of the loss of energy when the cart was running. The loss of energy was used to overcome the resistance. Furthermore, the less the experimental errors are, the closer the numbers of the two energies will be. What happened to the PE, KE and speed once you removed the 1 kg mass? (compare all values with and without the mass) The speed almost remained the same (2. 308m/s amp; 2. 236m/s), while PE amp; KE nearly halved after we removed the 1 kg mass (PE: 5. 71J amp; 2. 47J and KE: 4. 70J amp; 1. 91J). The soap box derby is a race between two carts as they roll down a hill. Does the weight of the cart make much different? Yes, it does. According to the law of conservation of energy, the kinetic energy equals to the initial potential energy (PE=mgh); while as the height doesnââ¬â¢t change, the amount of the potential energy depends on how much the mass is. As the data shows, when the mass of the cart changed, the potential energy and the kinetic energy also changed. And the ratio of the two masses equals to the ratio of the changing KE/PE.

Similarities Between Children And Their Parents Essays - Family
Similarities Between Children And Their Parents The Similarities and Differences Between Parents and Their Children The transition from childhood to adulthood is a journey undergone by all, but all in a different way. While some people believe that the maturation process is a time for one to develop one's individuality and uniqueness from one's parental figures, others believe that growing up is a fine-tuning of beliefs, morals and ideology passed down from generation to generation. The old saying A chip of the old block in most cases applies to every human, regardless of how different one may seem from one's parents. Qualities are inherited that cannot be suppressed and will always prevail despite how much one may want to differ form one's parents. While protruding into this topic, valuable issues must be discussed; moral ideology, lifestyles, social influences, and physical attributes are all factors in the distinction between a child and his/her parents. Morals are one of the key ingredients in raising a child. These thoughts are passed from the parent to the youngster from birth and possibly even as far as death. Parents are always helping the development of morals weather intentional or through actions displayed by the parent. Although a parent may not even realize that morals are being taught, the idea of good and bad are presented even in the act of disciplining a child. Kids grow up learning how to handle situations from past experiences and the lessons that have been attained. Perhaps a simple example of this rational is the lesson of truth. When a child lies to his/her mother, the mother reprimands the child and disciplinary action may be taken. If appropriately used, the punishment will teach the child that it is unacceptable to lie. As time progresses, the child will usually develop an understanding to tell the truth. This is important in comparing a child from a parent because if the parent never learned that it is inapprop riate to lie, then the child will most likely understand the importance of truth because truth was not a moral prevalent in the child's upbringing. Although parents most often teach commendable lessons, negative morals can also be developed in a person due to actions taken by the parent in the past. For example, it is a possibility that a parent is always pushing a child to attend church. When the child loathes attending services and tries at all costs to avoid them, a resistance to religion can be formed. The child can develop excuses as to why attending church is pointless and begin to believe these reasons. Further down in life a complete opposition to religion could possibly be established based on the roots of a boring mass. Now the parent whose morals are set in organized religion has a child who has drifted away from religion and entirely new ideas are developed in his/her mind. Morals play an important part in comparing and contrasting the similarities between a parent and a child. The presence of morals usually is passed down to the child, however sometimes the moral ideology presents itself in a completely different manner that proposes opposition between parents and children. While morals are very relevant to the discussion of behavioral similarities and differences between parents and children, lifestyles and the reasons behind a chosen lifestyle is also a prevalent topic in the discussion. Some people tend to choose a similar path that their parents have chosen, while others choose to break away and take a completely alternate route. The way one lives depends largely upon his/her personality and motivation, which in turn, is greatly effected by the parents. If one is brought up in an environment that is very neat and tidy, most likely that person will follow the habits of growing up in that manner and will continue to keep things orderly. The effect can be best described in terms of the word imitation. Because the child is so used to doing things a certain way, when the absence of the parent arises, the habits are carried over. Usually this process goes either one of two ways: the child either mimics the parent's habits or the child develops a resistanc e. Typically when youths reach college, they are

Sep 11th essays
Sep 11th essays September 11th, 2001 a day Americans will never forget, a day of mourning and sorrow. The time was approximately 9:10am on Tuesday morning. I was awaiting the arrival of my friend Michael at the Nassau Community fountain. We had the next 3 hours off and figured we would go get a bite to eat. Next to me there were two people talking, I couldnt help to overhear one of the boys say The world trade center was just blown up, come here you can see some of the smoke. Well obviously not knowing this boy, and avoiding making a fool of my self I stayed put, and didnt follow him. I just stood there wondering if this kid was for real. My friend arrived and we headed to his car to begin our long off period. When we got into the car I said Mike, I heard the world trade center was blown up. He had the same initial response that I had; he said bull shit, no way. I then recommended we tune into 660, they are always on top of the news. We were greeted with the first and scariest statement, the world trade center has just collapsed, and this is absolute mayhem... Previous to our off period we planned to stop at Best Buy, so I could purchase a DVD. When we arrived there we headed straight over to the television area. One or two customers had been hovered over the set to see what had happened. Within a few minutes many customers and concerned civilians gathered around the television set to find out exactly what had happened. We stood there with about 50 people staring at the TV, in shock and confusion. You could tell by the look on some of the peoples face they were wondering, who would do such a terrible thing, and if their friends and family were alright. Many of them already had proceeded to making cell phone calls. I remember the cell phone service being very boggled down, making it difficult to make calls, due to the large call value at that time. After about 30 minutes or so at Bes...

Compare & Contrast Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell Tale Heart and The Fall Essay
Compare & Contrast Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell Tale Heart and The Fall of the House of Usher - Essay Example ââ¬Å"â⬠¦found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher. I know not how it was - but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit. â⬠¦I looked upon the scene before me - upon the mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domain - upon the bleak walls - upon the vacant eye-like windows - upon a few rank sedges - and upon a few white trunks of decayed treesâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Baym/Poe, 1553) Against this gloomy background we are introduced to the narrator who remains nameless as is the narrator in The Tell-Tale Heart. In typical Gothic fashion The Fall of the House of Usherââ¬â¢s narrator introduces a striking contrast. He is about to enter the gloomy house with a view to bringing some cheer to his friend, Roderick Usherââ¬â¢s melancholic mood. (Byam/Poe, 1553) True to Gothic form Poe has succeeded in introducing us to a subliminal element. This is a subliminal element in that the reader will not hesitate to latch onto as a false sense of security, expecting brightness and a cure to the malady afflicting Roderick Usher. This is a typical technique of Gothic writers. (Punter, 116) The Gothic element of fear is set up in a different way in The Tell-Tale Heart. The narrator first introduces us to fear that has been instilled in him as a result of the physical condition of an old manââ¬â¢s eye which he described as: ââ¬Å"One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture -- a pale blue eye with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me my blood ran cold, and so by degrees, very gradually, I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye for ever.â⬠(Baym/Poe, 1589) Both tales describe madness in a similar nature. Although in The Fall of the House of Usher, madness is viewed as a malady to be cured while in The Tell-Tale Heart madness is viewed with optimism. Usher who is a hypochondriac complains of having an over sensitivity to sight and sound

Modern Technology Has Made Our Lives More Complicated
Hardyââ¬â¢s Mayor of Casterbridge is a novel that revolves around the concealment and divulging of secrets. Henchard, Susan, Newson and Lucetta all keep secrets, which are revealed throughout the course of the novel. Although Susan is a minor character, she plays a major role in the novel through the concealment of her secret. She hides her daughter Elizabeth Janeââ¬â¢s true identity from Henchard, thus allowing him to think she is his daughter. She also keeps the information about her prior relationship with Henchard from Elizabeth Jane, as well as the fact that she had a half-sister that died. The lack of information strangles the relationship between Henchard and Elizabeth Jane. Although Susan keeps these secrets to protect her daughter, her lack of candor results in the consequences she fears most ââ¬â her daughterââ¬â¢s emotional upheaval. While Susan herself does not reveal the secret, it is disclosed through a letter before the planned time, thus causing Elizabeth Janeââ¬â¢s alienation from Henchard. The reader is oblivious to Susanââ¬â¢s secret until it is revealed in her letter to Henchard. Susan chooses to keep Elizabeth Janeââ¬â¢s identity a secret because she is afraid of disappointing Henchard. A quiet, unassuming woman, Susan is scared of disappointing others and how they will react when she upsets them. She believes that in order to restore order between her and Henchard she must conceal the truth about Elizabeth Jane. It is hard enough for her to reunite with Henchard and when she is alone in the ring with him, she admits meekly, ââ¬Å"I am quite in your hands, Michaelâ⬠¦if you tell me to leave again to-morrow morning, and never come near you more, I am content to goâ⬠(63). Susanââ¬â¢s speech is reflective of her timid and submissive personality. In addition, when Henchard asks Susan if she forgives him, ââ¬Å"she murmured something; but seemed to find it difficult to frame her answerâ⬠(64). Susan is unable to show her true feelings because she is afraid of Henchardââ¬â¢s reaction. Thus she finds it necessary to keep Elizabeth Janeââ¬â¢s birth a secret because she is scared of upsetting Henchard. At the same time that she conceals the identity of Elizabeth Janeââ¬â¢s father from Henchard, she hides her connection with Henchard from Elizabeth Jane. Although many times ââ¬Å"she had been upon the point of telling her daughter Elizabeth-Jane the true story of her lifeâ⬠in the end she ââ¬Å"had restrainedâ⬠(20). Susanââ¬â¢s choice to leave her daughter in the dark allows Elizabeth Jane to enjoy an innocent childhood, and she is blissfully unaware of her motherââ¬â¢s troubles. Susan is afraid of disrupting Elizabeth Janeââ¬â¢s equilibrium and cannot bring herself to tell the truth. ââ¬Å"The risk of endangering a child's strong affection by disturbing ideas which had grown with her growth was to Mrs. Henchard too fearful a thing to contemplateâ⬠(20). The words ââ¬Å"endangeringâ⬠and ââ¬Å"disturbingâ⬠highlight Susanââ¬â¢s main goal in hiding her secret from Elizabeth Jane and reflect her entire purpose in life. Because Susan is meek and easily controlled, she is afraid to cause a reaction that she cannot control. She is ââ¬Å"fearfulâ⬠of anything beyond the ordinary, including unexpected reactions. This character trait is evident when she first meets Henchard and is surprised by his appearance as mayor. ââ¬Å"I don't think I can ever meet Mr. Henchard,â⬠she says in shock. ââ¬Å"He is not how I thought he would beââ¬âhe overpowers me! I don't wish to see him any moreâ⬠(29). The sentiments she expresses in this statement illustrate her fear of the unknown, and her easily manipulated nature. Susan uses the word ââ¬Å"overpowersâ⬠to demonstrate the lack of control she feels in her life and her tendency to be dominated by a superior. In Elizabeth Janeââ¬â¢s case, as in her relationship with Henchard, she prefers secrecy over openness because of her fear of upsetting others. Susanââ¬â¢s secrets are unexpectedly disclosed to both parties, when she is no longer alive to view the reaction. Their revelation results in the opposite effect, harming both Henchard and Elizabeth Jane. Susanââ¬â¢s greatest desire is to shield her daughter from trouble, but her fear of dealing with the truth ends up bringing on what she dreads most. Susan is overly concerned with appearances and manners, and she fusses about what others will think and say. Susanââ¬â¢s letter exhibits her tendency to avoid disappointing and shocking others. Even in her writing one can sense her fright at revealing the news to her husband. She begins her letter by prefacing ââ¬Å"I hope you will understand whyâ⬠(108). Later on she begs, ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t curse me, Mike. â⬠Although she is only writing and not speaking, she finds it hard to let out her secret, explaining ââ¬Å"I can hardly write it. â⬠However, despite all of Susanââ¬â¢s reservations and hesitations, and intentions to protect her daughter, she ends up harming her. Her worst fears are confirmed when Henchard begins to treat Elizabeth Jane coldly and Elizabeth Jane ââ¬Å"lived on, a dumb, deep-feeling, great-eyed creatureâ⬠(115). Instead of showering her with warmth and love, Henchard sharply reprimands her when she uses incorrect grammar. ââ¬Å"Are you only fit to carry wash to a pig trough,â⬠(114) he yells, degrading Elizabeth Jane and humiliating her. Susanââ¬â¢s secret keeping leaves Elizabeth Jane worse off. Her lack of confidence ends up bringing on what she fears most. Hardy uses secrets in The Mayor of Casterbridge to highlight Susanââ¬â¢s character flaw and demonstrate that the situations people fear most are those they ultimately bring upon themselves. While Susan acts out of a desire to help Elizabeth Jane and Henchard, she ends up harming both of them. The concealment of information from her daughter and husband is what destroys their relationship. Susanââ¬â¢s greatest concern is what people will think about her daughter and her top priority is conforming to societal standards. However, her meek personality and constant worrying eventually cause her worst fears to come true. Susanââ¬â¢s saga of secret-keeping serves as a warning to readersâ⬠¦ concealing the truth will come back to haunt you.

According to Harris (1984), half of the women came from small farm backgrounds and commuted to work everyday. However the opening up of the economy in 1958 can show a change in social and economic ideologies. As (Commins cited in Clancy et al 1986) notes ââ¬Å"rural prosperity was to be sought not only in agriculture but in the comprehensive development of industry, tourism and other enterprisesâ⬠(p54). This shift in ideologies was fundamental for the survival of the west of Ireland as in [keeping the name on the land] and indeed the survival of the country.
